Malaysian University English Test (MUET), first launched in 1999 and administered by Malaysian Examinations Council (Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia), is a test to measure candidates’ English language proficiency. MUET is taken by students who intend to pursue their tertiary education at local public universities since it is a mandatory test to gain entry into degree courses offered at all Malaysian public universities. This test is carried out twice a year, in April/May and October/November. Candidates usually register through their academic institutions while private candidates through State Education Departments (Jabatan Pelajaran Negeri), with a registration fee of RM60.

Unlike International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) which are globally accepted as the certification of English language proficiency, MUET is recognized only in Malaysia and Singapore (National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University).

Candidates are rated into six bands – band one being the lowest and band six being the highest — according to their test scores. The total score is 300 and the table below shows MUET band description.

Students that have taken MUET are eligible to be enrolled into degree courses offered at local public universities as long as their CGPA for Diploma STPM or Malaysian Matriculation examinations are good enough to fulfil the entry requirement. The difference between all these bands is that students from band 1 and 2 have to take two extra English courses during holidays while band 3 and 4 students take one extra course. Students with band 5 or 6 can skip the extra English course. Some competitive degree courses like medicine and pharmacy, however, require students to get band 5 or 6 in MUET.

Nevertheless to what extent you are prepared with the exam to be given shortly, the important factor that anyone should realize is that you cannot score high if you neglect your presentation. Here are some steps in 3 levels to follow to score well in the exams.

Before starting up:
*As soon as you enter the examination center, go straight to the exam hall and be seated in your allotted seat and relax, without starting any chitchat with anyone.
*Once you have your question paper in your hand, don’t straight away start giving your exam.
*Have a look at the instructions given at the top of the question paper to ensure any new changes have not been proposed.
*Be clear with the number of questions to be answered, marks for each question in various sections, time allotted for each set of questions.
*Identify and Mark or underline the critical terms raised in the questions for quick reference later.
*Be clear with which questions you want to go for answering and concentrate on them.
*You should be keen on understanding the way the question is raised in the exam paper, for example, you have to observe carefully whether the question is asked for description, differentiation, brief content, classification etc.
Plan your time with each answer considering its marks and time given in the instructions.
*Be sure that you end up answering earlier than what you have scheduled.
*Be clear with which question you want to go first in order to manage time and marks as well.
*Prepare an outline for lengthy answers before, so that you can keep your pen running without any break.

While writing the Answers:
*First write your roll number, exam paper code, and question number with reference to the exam paper correctly.
*Prepare a framework in mind of what to be written to a particular question before you put on the answer paper.
*Answer exactly of what has been asked with respect to the marks and time, although you might know more than what is asked in the question.
*You can score good marks if you put the answer straight, precise and in the form of points to make the valuator understand clearly your answer.
*While writing the answer, always keep your cool even though you are well acquainted with the answer and help yourself give a clear and worthful answer.
*Always maintain the margins, side headings if necessary, in the answer paper so that your papers give a good feeling to the valuator, later.
*Keep an eye on the watch too, to give you an idea of how well you can manage the answer in time, so as to avoid time constraints to the remaining answers.
*Should not get disappointed if the question paper is tough, remembering that it would be the same with all, try to give your best with your conscience.
*Try to finish answering the question paper at least 10 minutes before and attach all the additionals properly and check the answer paper thoroughly to ensure all the questions are answered.
*If you find any points missing in the answers given, add the points accordingly.

After giving the Exam:
*Once you finish the exam and you are out of the examination hall, don’t think about the written paper anymore, and remember you have to get ready for the next exam.
*Do not discuss about the finished exam or answers with your friends, because that will affect your confidence levels.
*And finally when you are finished with all of your exams, make a habit of putting all your experiences and opinions about the exams written in a book. In future, they will help a lot for later exams and makes you easier and handy.

Exams are the critical moments which give fruitful results for the yearly hard work.
